BVA Animal Welfare Foundation Final Year Welfare Forum 2009
|
Final year veterinary students gathered for an entertaining, yet thought-provoking, animal welfare forum hosted by the BVA AWF earlier this month.
The two-day Forum, overseen by our Chairman, Carl Padgett, is held at Lancaster University before the start of the BVA/ SPVS Final Year conference each year. |

The workshop style event allows students to consider ethical dilemmas that they are likely to face when working in different types of veterinary practice, addressing not only the animal, but also the human and personal welfare situations that practicing vets might find themselves in.
With guidance of tutors from the BVA AWF, Dogs Trust, PDSA, private practice, government and a vet from the research animal sector, the students are encouraged to consider animal welfare case studies involving farm and companion animals. Most of the case studies are written by the tutors and are based on real situations they have encountered in practice. In working through the scenarios the students must take into account their clinical knowledge but also current legislation, communication skills with clients, professional guidelines and liaison with other bodies such as Defra and animal welfare organisations. Student’s acting skills are put to the test when the groups are asked to act out how they would deal with their particular case for the rest of the group. |

The students were incredibly enthusiastic and threw themselves into the role plays, which were hilarious at times, and the whole event had a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere while also encouraging the students to think about and debate some serious welfare issues. Education continued well into evening during conversations over dinner and a pub quiz, compared by Mr Padgett, which included questions on the animal welfare act and gestation periods, in addition to general knowledge and a music round. |

Feedback from the Forum has been consistently positive; the opportunity to develop skills in dealing with welfare-sensitive issues is viewed by the students as extremely valuable and 2009 has been no exception. One student highlighting how useful it was to hear about the personal experience of the tutors who have first hand experience of many of the scenarios covered.
This year, trustees were also delighted to receive sponsorship from the Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust. The Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust is a grant-giving body which donates fund to UK registered charities whose purposes encompass activities such as encouraging the understanding of animals.
The Final Year Welfare Forum is just one way in which the BVA AWF contributes to the improvement of animal welfare through education and debate.
